Location selection

Multimodal Hubs location selection

Multimodal Hubs are designed in harmony with the surroundings areas and the existing infrastructure, connecting several existing transport modes for the provision of seamless and intermodal travel. However, they also need to be able to adjust to any further future transport modes integration as well.

The location selection is identified from the early stages of setting up a multimodal hub and is a rather crucial decision that has to be taken for ensuring that this is sited in the correct site and not just an available space area. Mobility hubs can be located in different environments:

Urban city centers

Suburban areas

Peri-Urban areas

Before deciding on a specific location for developing a multimodal hub, it is important to define and prioritise locations. Cities and MOVE21 and across Europe have developed different systems on how to prioritise locations. Recurrent elements to consider when defining locations are:

  • Accessibility, safety, and security provision for both passengers and cargo
  • Land ownership
  • Lack of facilities
  • Demand for facilities
  • Existing transport modes and infrastructure (that serve mobility at neighbourhood, city , FUA or TEN-T level)
  • Connection or interface with TEN-T
  • Future transport modes, services, and infrastructure
  • Existing mobility demand
  • Lack of mobility demand
  • Existing facilities that may require replacements/modifications/re-purposing such as parking spaces.
  • Plans to optimize the existing transport system and infrastructure (e.g., introduction of new bus routes, extension of cycling line etc.)
  • Temporary availability of space
  • Available land or properties
  • Site is well visible and lit (on or near busy squares and busy streets)
  • Positioning in front of listed buildings is to be avoided; ensemble protection is to be observed

In the methodology section you will find further information on the Spatial-context analysis applied in MOVE21 to identify and chose hub locations.
