The Metropolitan City of Bologna is an inter-municipal metropolitan area with a population of just over 1 million spread across 55 municipalities. It is a major agricultural, industrial and financial centre and is one of the most prosperous cities in Italy. Bologna is an important urban node along the Scan-Med corridor, crossed by the national railway, with its central railway station, a national motorway that crosses the metropolitan area, the Bologna-Borgo Panigale airport and an interport. The city was one of the first in Europe to adopt an integrated Sustainable Urban Mobility and Logistics Plan (SUMP-SULP) in November 2019.
As part of MOVE21, Bologna continued to promote sustainable mobility through the development of 30 mobility hubs aimed at promoting active and green travel, while integrating logistics services such as parcel lockers. The main focus areas were Castel San Pietro and Vergato. The Living Labs involved in the project exchanged knowledge with Bologna, in particular on the combination of passenger and logistics mobility planning through the SUMP-SULP learning process, as well as on the establishment of effective public-private partnerships for financing sustainable urban mobility measures. Replication efforts focused on last-mile parcel delivery in the Limited Traffic Zone based on automated logistics micro-hubs, and involvement of local stakeholders and shoppers in a combined raw-waste materials shipment based on an already existing mobility hub. Temporary hubs for micro-mobility supporting major events were tested, focusing mainly on promoting cycling mobility and reducing polluting traffic.
