Holstenstraße hub

The neighbourhood hub Holstenstraße combines primarily new mobility solutions for logistic services and social functions for the neighbourhood. The hub is located in an urban setting between Altona Centre and the City Centre in a previously vacant commercial building owned by SAGA, Hamburg’s largest municipal housing company.

In terms of logistics, the hub provides space for the reloading of parcels and other goods, which are delivered locally emission-free by electric cargo bikes. The space is used jointly by three different logistics companies. This allows for new models of cooperation to be tested. The logistics companies operating in the neighbourhood hub at Holstenstraße 20 are the parcel delivery companies GLS and Hermes and the logistics service provider City Log. In the area of social offers, the social workers of the Altona district, the Karin and Walter Blüchert Memorial Foundation and Dein Topf e. V. have joined forces to create a “Social Service and Consultation Kiosk.” On weekdays, the kiosk offers private counselling and support services for people from the neighbourhood, including financial and debt advice, tenancy issues, and job preparation courses for young people. In addition, in the hub, Dein Topf has set up a distribution point for food, clothing and other basic necessities for people in need. Mobility services are gradually being integrated through measures such as new bicycle racks at the hub or workshops for bicycle repairs.

The collaboration with SAGA also offers great up-scaling potential for the development of further hubs in the future. Currently, work is already underway to develop another neighbourhood hub in the suburb of Sülldorf in a SAGA building.
